Meta Platforms said California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are seeking $1.4 trillion in penalties over claims it built Facebook and Instagram to addict teenage users. The demand was filed ahead of a federal trial in Oakland this August, according to BeInCrypto, and Meta said the figure is unsupported by the evidence. The company said no U.S. consumer protection case has imposed a comparable sanction. The broader case involves 29 states alleging COPPA violations tied to collecting children’s data without parental consent; Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers rejected Meta’s bid to cancel the trial. Meta shares closed near $600 on July 6, up almost 3%.
