According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, IQAir data showed Washington, D.C., briefly became the world’s most polluted major city after a U.S. Independence Day fireworks display promoted by the Trump administration as “spectacular.” The White House-backed “Freedom 250” group had commissioned fireworks company Pyrotecnico with a goal of launching 850,000 fireworks to break a world record, though experts had warned that setting off that volume within 40 minutes could pose serious health risks. AFP said U.S. city data showed one monitoring station recorded a PM2.5 peak above 200 micrograms per cubic meter, versus the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 24-hour PM2.5 standard of 35 micrograms per cubic meter; a “Code Purple” air-quality alert covered much of Washington, D.C., and broader areas including Virginia and Maryland.
