U.S. striker Folarin Balogun will be available for Monday’s Round of 16 game against Belgium after his red card was overturned, according to Yahoo Sports. Balogun had been set to miss the match under an automatic one-game suspension after being sent off in the United States’ win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Yahoo Sports reported that President Donald Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday to ask FIFA to review Balogun’s ban, and Trump confirmed Monday that he requested the review. Infantino also confirmed Monday that Trump called him about the red card but said FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent and that he did not influence the decision; FIFA said the automatic match suspension for Balogun was suspended for a one-year probationary period under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
