UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on July 6 that the pace of artificial intelligence development has exceeded everyone’s ability to keep up, and he called for unified global rules to reduce potential risks, particularly risks to children.
According to Odaily, Guterres made the remarks on Monday at the first government-level AI Global Dialogue in Geneva.
He said the technology can reshape economies, change workplace structures, influence election outcomes, and affect security balances, but its deployment is moving faster than anyone—including its developers—can follow.
Guterres said innovation needs “guardrails” and that for AI to play a strong role, it must be effectively governed.
