According to Lianhe Zaobao citing AFP, a Quinnipiac University poll found that 61% of Americans say the United States has not lived up to the ideals set out in the Declaration of Independence, with most Republicans saying it has and most Democrats saying it has not. Lianhe Zaobao also cited a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing that a majority of Americans—including three-quarters of Democrats and about half of Republicans—think events marking the country’s 250th anniversary are overly politicized. The report said President Donald Trump has sought to revamp large parts of Washington ahead of the anniversary, with mixed results; while many fountains and statues were refurbished, a high-profile renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has faced problems despite costing USD 15 million (about SGD 19.37 million).
