According to Lianhe Zaobao citing Xinhua, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said it recorded nearly 1,800 security incidents in the Lake Chad Basin from September 2025 to May 2026, resulting in more than 5,700 deaths, as the region’s security situation deteriorated sharply and displacement rose. In a statement released Friday, July 3, UNHCR said the Lake Chad Basin—spanning parts of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria—has more than 3.5 million people forcibly displaced and 8.2 million in need of humanitarian assistance. UNHCR said security incidents increased significantly from January 2024 to April 2026, including attacks on civilians, killings, kidnappings, explosions, armed clashes and village raids, and warned that without timely and flexible support, displacement could continue to spread across borders and raise the risk of a protracted regional crisis.
