An anonymous defendant has asked the New York State Supreme Court to dismiss a lawsuit seeking ownership rights over 39,069 long-inactive Bitcoin addresses, arguing that a Bitcoin address is merely a string of blockchain data and is not a legal entity that can be sued.
According to ChainCatcher, the case centers on a plaintiff’s attempt to apply New York lost-property rules to claim that long-dormant BTC constitutes abandoned, ownerless property and should be awarded through judicial action.
The report also cited an industry view highlighting a technical obstacle: even if a court were to rule in favor of the plaintiff’s ownership claim, the assets could remain effectively uncontrollable without the corresponding private keys, limiting the practical enforceability of any judgment.
