Hong Kong stocks opened higher after the holiday but gave up part of their gains, with the Hang Seng Index closing up 0.76% at 23,055.03 after earlier rising more than 2% to an intraday high of 23,335.92.
According to Jin10, the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 0.4% to 4,454.28 after turning lower in the afternoon.
Market turnover totaled HK$369.63 billion, up from HK$308.05 billion in the previous session.
On the sector front, computing hardware and semiconductor shares sold off broadly in line with overseas markets, with several stocks dropping more than 10%. Auto, rare earth, and precious metals shares led gains, while the innovative drug sector rose again in the afternoon.
Among individual stocks, BYD Co. rose 8.07%, China Gold International gained 11.43%, JL MAG Rare-Earth climbed 12.03%, and CSPC Pharmaceutical Group advanced 8.32%. GigaDevice Semiconductor fell 18.39%, and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. declined 10.07%.
