Last year, the Association of Italian Banks (ABI) said it would pilot a wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC), or Leonidas project, as part of the Italian banking sandbox. The association published the results of the trial last week and declared it a success. The main benefits are atomic transactions, transparency and information traceability.
The test will take place in 2023 and is planned to take place before the European System announces a wholesale DLT trial using central bank funds.
The trial used two different wholesale CBDC models. Participants in the trial included ABI, 16 banks, blockchain firm R3, NTT Data, Spunta's technology partner, and the Milan Center, an innovation hub for Italian banks.
