Folarin Balogun was shown a controversial red card after a VAR review in the USA’s World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite Brazilian referee Raphael Claus initially not awarding a free kick. Balogun, who scored the USA’s first-half opener, was dismissed midway through the second half after a tussle with Tarik Muharemovic in which replays showed Balogun’s leg scraping down the defender’s calf, according to Yahoo Sports.

The sending-off left the USA to play the final 25 minutes with 10 men as they tried to secure a last-16 berth ahead of a match against Belgium in Seattle on Monday. Balogun faces at least a one-match suspension for serious foul play, with the USA able to appeal and the FIFA disciplinary committee able to extend the ban.
