EthLabs在以太坊（Ethereum）生态经历多年最大领导层更迭之际成立，定位为非营利研究组织，称并非要取代陷入困境的以太坊基金会（Ethereum Foundation）。据CoinDesk报道，EthLabs在基金会大规模裁员前一天公开亮相，且在联席执行董事Hsiao-Wei Wang宣布辞职数日后；自1月以来基金会至少9名核心成员离任。EthLabs执行董事Ansgar Dietrichs表示，团队由多名前基金会研究员和开发者组成，将聚焦以采用为导向的工程工作，包括提升可扩展性、强化layer-1性能与互操作性，并与金融机构沟通。
