Mexico fans were accused of using a chant considered homophobic during Mexico’s 2-0 World Cup round-of-32 win over Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday night, with the slur heard when Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez took a goal kick in the fifth minute. It was the second time the chant has been used at the tournament and it has previously led to FIFA fines for the Mexican federation, according to Yahoo Sports.

The report said Mexico could face England at the same venue on Sunday if Thomas Tuchel’s team beats DR Congo on Wednesday. It also cited Mexico City health officials as saying three people — a 44-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman — died from asphyxiation near Paseo de la Reforma while celebrating Mexico’s qualification.
