After a VAR review, the referee confirmed the dismissal at the Azteca Stadium under a new World Cup rule that makes covering the mouth in conversation an automatic red card.
Mexico advanced with a 2-0 win in Mexico City as Julián Quiñones scored in the 22nd minute and set up Raúl Jiménez for the second in the 31st. Yahoo Sports reported Mexico will face either England or DR Congo in the last 16 at the Azteca on Sunday night.
