Senators Tim Scott and Bill Hagerty introduced a bill that would expand the U.S. Commerce Department’s authority to block transactions involving AI and related technology tied to foreign adversary countries. The proposal would let Commerce stop deals involving technology “designed, developed, manufactured, or supplied” by entities owned, controlled, or directed by such countries, according to CoinDesk, and would codify an assistant secretary role overseeing information and communications technology supply chains. The bill also seeks to maintain public access to open-source AI software.
