The U.S. Department of Commerce has adjusted export restrictions on AI company Anthropic’s advanced models, lifting the export ban on Claude Mythos 5 while maintaining restrictions on the high-end model Fable 5.

According to Odaily, the policy change allows certain compliant, controlled users to resume access to Claude Mythos 5, which is described as a cybersecurity model. The restrictions on Fable 5 remain in place, and related policy consultations are continuing.

Industry analysis cited in the report said the tiered approach—loosening controls on one model while keeping limits on another—reflects U.S. considerations involving national security, data sovereignty, and international AI competition.

The report added that as the global AI race accelerates, specialized models with vulnerability discovery capabilities are facing stricter scrutiny in multiple countries, and discussions have begun on cross-border unified regulatory frameworks for advanced AI capabilities.
