Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published an essay titled “Obfuscation: building the final boss of cryptography (Part I),” outlining the technical development path behind indistinguishability obfuscation (iO) protocols.
According to Odaily, the essay says obfuscation can transform a program into an “encrypted program” that hides its internal logic while still allowing computation on plaintext inputs.
Buterin wrote that, in theory, this approach could enable a “trusted third party without trust.” He added that combining such techniques with blockchain could support applications such as near trustless voting systems and auction protocols.
The essay also noted that while current iO schemes have polynomial-time running time in a technical sense, their practical overhead remains extremely large, with estimated runtimes exceeding the lifetime of the universe.
