South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo announced he is stepping down after the Taegeuk Warriors were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup following a 1-0 loss to South Africa on Wednesday. President Lee Jae Myung called for the government’s sports ministry to investigate South Korea’s World Cup results and the process by which Hong was hired, according to Yahoo Sports.

South Korea opened Group A with wins over El Salvador (1-0) and Czechia (2-1) but then lost 1-0 to Mexico and 1-0 to South Africa to finish on three points and miss the Round of 32. South Africa advanced to the Round of 32 for the first time in the country’s World Cup history.
