North America’s energy trade runs mainly through two bilateral ties — Canadian oil flowing into US refineries and US natural gas supplying Mexico — rather than as a fully integrated three-country system, according to Bloomberg.
Howard Energy Partners CEO Mike Howard said roughly 70% of Mexico’s energy comes from the United States. Former Canada Energy Regulator CEO Gitane De Silva said about 60% of US oil imports originate in Canada.
With USMCA negotiations approaching, energy executives, regulators and policy experts largely agree the current setup works well and may be best left largely unchanged.
