Italian referee Maurizio Mariani has been appointed to officiate the World Cup Round of 32 match between Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil and Japan, with Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni as assistant referees and Switzerland’s Sandro Scharer as fourth official. The game kicks off at Houston Stadium on Monday at 18.00 UK time (19.00 CEST), according to Yahoo Sports.
Mariani is the only Italian referee at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, and has previously handled Saudi Arabia’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay and Colombia’s 1-0 win over DR Congo. Brazil topped their group after a 1-1 draw with Morocco and 3-0 wins over Haiti and Scotland, while Japan finished runners-up after draws with the Netherlands and Sweden and a 4-0 win over Tunisia.
