The U.S. government is set to review which companies will be allowed to use OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT-related technology, marking an expansion of regulation over Silicon Valley under the Trump administration.

According to Jin10, The Washington Post reported that the government will screen companies seeking access to OpenAI’s newest technology.

In a blog post released on Friday, OpenAI announced its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6, named Sol. The report said the government will initially approve who can use the new version, while AI companies and the government will jointly develop a long-term regulatory plan for the industry.

OpenAI said it is cautious about additional federal oversight. The company stated that it does not believe a government approval process should become the long-term default, arguing it could prevent users, developers, businesses, cybersecurity defenders, and global partners who need these tools from accessing the best available technology.
