Paraguayan broadcaster Jorge “Chipi” Vera had his World Cup credentials revoked by FIFA earlier this week after an expletive-filled on-air rant during Paraguay’s match against Türkiye on Friday, according to Yahoo Sports. Vera reacted to referee Ivan Barton showing a first-half red card to Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón for appearing to say something to Türkiye’s Mert Müldür while covering his mouth, an action now treated as an ejectable offense under FIFA’s anti-racial-abuse effort; Paraguay won 1-0. Vera later posted an apology on social media, and his employer ABC Cardinal reportedly appealed the decision, but Vera said he planned to watch Thursday’s game against Australia from the stands.
