Egg prices in South Korea have risen noticeably in recent weeks, reviving the term “egg inflation” in local media.

According to Jin10, South Korean media cited data from the Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

As of mid-June, the retail price for a carton of 30 eggs was 7,506 won, up 7.1% from a year earlier. The average retail price of a 10-egg carton of premium eggs rose to 5,229 won this month, marking the first time it exceeded 5,000 won. That price was up 16.7% from May and nearly 39% higher than the same period last year.

The reports said the government increased imports to address reduced domestic supply, while consumers increasingly compared prices across sellers to find cheaper eggs.

Average daily egg supply this month was 47.05 million eggs, down 3.3% from a year earlier.
