AWS CEO Matt Garman said concerns that artificial intelligence will trigger mass unemployment are being exaggerated, arguing that AI is more likely to reshape work than eliminate jobs outright.
According to ChainCatcher, Garman told Business Insider that AI could change how about half of white-collar employees do their work, comparing the shift to how Microsoft Excel transformed office tasks while also creating new roles.
Garman also emphasized the continued importance of entry-level workers in an AI-driven workplace, saying junior employees tend to have stronger willingness to learn and adapt.
He said Amazon plans to hire more than 11,000 junior software development engineers and interns globally this year. Garman added that in future hiring, companies may prioritize candidates’ learning ability and adaptability over their existing specific skills.
