Beijing Benz Sales Service Co. plans to cut headcount from about 900 to below 600 through two rounds of layoffs, with around 10% already implemented and compensation set at N+6, China Economic Net reported, according to Jiemian News. People familiar with the matter said staff adjustments since 2025 have also affected Mercedes-Benz’s China operations across auto finance, sales, IT, R&D and manufacturing, with compensation terms varying.
In R&D, sources said Mercedes-Benz’s China centers in Beijing and Shanghai employ about 2,000 people, and the unit is expected to reduce staff by about 10% this year, though this has not been officially confirmed. In manufacturing, employees said personnel optimization has been underway since 2025 at Beijing Benz Automotive Co.’s Yizhuang and Shunyi plants, and one source estimated more than 2,000 departures last year. A person close to the Yizhuang plant said the company has increased downtime as output fell, including more than 10 consecutive days off in April.
Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales in China fell 7% in 2024 to 683,600 units and dropped 19% in 2025 to about 551,900 units; the decline widened to 27% in the first quarter of 2026, the company said.
