A new Ethereum research lab, Ethlabs, launched this week with funding from Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, Bitmine Immersion Technologies, and Sharplink, though the amount of funding was not disclosed. According to ChainCatcher, Bitmine holds about 5.7 million ETH and Sharplink holds about 876,000 ETH.

Sharplink CEO Joseph Chalom said Ethlabs is intended to complement the Ethereum Foundation, while acknowledging the two will overlap in some areas and that the “most concentrated talent” will be at Ethlabs. He said the lab will focus on faster settlement, cross-chain interoperability, and readiness for institutional and AI applications—areas that closely align with the Ethereum Foundation’s priorities following its reorganization this week.

The launch comes as the Ethereum Foundation cut about 40% of its 2026 budget this week and eliminated 54 roles. Vitalik Buterin described the changes as a shift toward an endowment-style model.

Former foundation core development coordinator Trent Van Epps warned last week that core development could face a funding gap within three to nine months. ChainCatcher reported that Ethlabs’ first major test will be the Glamsterdam upgrade, where the two organizations’ roadmaps are expected to intersect for the first time amid a limited upgrade pipeline.
