Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed said a U.S.-Iran hotline is crucial to preventing “spoilers” from obstructing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Jin10, he said the hotline, agreed during U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland, is intended to combat “disinformation” and ensure coordination among parties while mines are cleared from the strait.
He said one current challenge is that “anyone who just wants to cause trouble” could use maritime communications systems to send threatening warnings to ships, such as messages telling vessels to turn back and claiming, “We will open fire; we are the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.” He said such messages are sometimes received.
Sheikh Mohammed said the purpose of the hotline is to ensure that any ship receiving a threat can verify its authenticity with the Iranian side and pass through the strait safely.
He also said Qatar has begun preparing to resume operations. After the warring sides signed a memorandum of understanding last week, he said Qatar started preparing oil tankers and expects to restore normal liquefied natural gas production within a few weeks.
