Oman said it has coordinated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to open a temporary maritime lane in the Strait of Hormuz for all vessels.
According to Jin10, Oman said in a statement issued early on June 24 that the move was based on its responsibilities regarding the strait and the strait’s importance to the global economy.
Oman said the arrangement would comply with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ensure free passage through the strait, and impose no transit fees.
The statement also cited outcomes from U.S.-Iran negotiations and mediation efforts.
Oman said the lane will operate according to navigation coordinates published by the IMO and Omani competent authorities. Vessels planning to use the lane must coordinate in advance with the IMO, it added.
