OpenAI made its Cannes Lions debut this week pitching ChatGPT ads to top marketers, but the reception was muted. According to BeInCrypto, OpenAI global head of ads David Dugan said the company is “totally committed” to making advertising a major revenue stream, citing roughly 20% of ChatGPT queries as having direct commercial intent.

OpenAI has told investors it could grow ads into a $100 billion business by 2030, while executives at Cannes said it needs better targeting and measurement to challenge Google in search ads. The report also cites user and staff pushback, including researcher Zoë Hitzig’s resignation, and notes OpenAI spent $34 billion last year and remains unprofitable.
