A group of 10 Australians has filed a complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Committee accusing the Australian government of violating their human rights by continuing to export coal and gas, according to BBC. The group says extreme weather including bushfires, floods, heatwaves, rising sea levels and toxic algal blooms has harmed their lives, and argues government support for fossil fuel companies is to blame.
Lawyer Hannah White of Environmental Justice Australia said the group is asking the committee to declare it unlawful for Australia to keep approving and subsidising coal and gas for export without a plan to protect people from dangerous climate change. The case follows a ruling last July by the International Court of Justice that countries can sue each other over climate change. Any UN decision would not be legally binding, but Australia, one of the world’s largest coal and gas exporters, would be expected to respond. The BBC said it contacted Environment Minister Murray Watt for comment.
