Elon Musk backed NVIDIA’s claim that data center water use is far smaller than critics suggest. According to BeInCrypto, NVIDIA cited a March 2026 Manhattan Institute estimate that data centers use about 0.2% of U.S. freshwater, mostly indirectly via power generation, and said its 45°C liquid cooling can cut facility cooling water from about 2.6 million gallons per megawatt a year to near zero by using dry coolers in cool climates.
BeInCrypto noted Berkeley Lab estimates U.S. data centers used 17.4 billion gallons directly in 2023 and 211 billion gallons indirectly, with direct use projected at 38–73 billion gallons by 2028; xAI’s Memphis Colossus has drawn roughly 1.3 million gallons a day.
