French sports media outlet L’Équipe said it had apologised to Belgium winger Jeremy Doku and distanced itself from comments by presenter France Pierron criticising him for wanting to leave the World Cup for the birth of his first child, according to Yahoo Sports. Doku, 24, a Manchester City player, said he intended to be present for the birth of his son in early July, during the knockout rounds, while England forward Ollie Watkins voiced support for players’ family choices.
Doku missed Belgium’s 0-0 draw with Iran on Sunday due to illness, leaving Belgium on two points after also drawing 1-1 with Egypt. Belgium face New Zealand on Friday night and are likely to need at least a point to reach the last-32.
