Apple plans to raise prices for its products after a surge in the cost of memory chips, CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal, according to BBC. Cook said price increases are “unavoidable” and that the situation has become “unsustainable”, but did not say when prices would rise or which products would be affected, and it is unclear whether any hikes would affect the iPhone 18 expected to launch in September.

Cook said Apple has tried to mitigate increases passed on by memory suppliers amid tighter supply and strong demand. The price of RAM has more than doubled since October 2025, the report said. BBC said the boom in artificial intelligence has driven up memory prices, while the war in Iran has disrupted global helium supplies used in semiconductor manufacturing.

Cook is due to be replaced by John Ternus as Apple’s CEO in September after 15 years in the role. BBC reported Apple device sales rose 17% in the first three months of 2026 versus a year earlier, helped by demand in China, and that Apple raised the price of its Mac Mini by about $200 (£150) earlier this year.
