MetaMask has launched a new feature designed to detect address poisoning scams by identifying wallet addresses that closely resemble ones a user has previously interacted with.
According to ChainCatcher, citing Crowdfund Insider, address poisoning involves attackers sending small token transfers so a spoofed address appears in a victim’s transaction history, increasing the chance the victim later copies the wrong address and transfers funds.
The new MetaMask protection compares a pasted address against a user’s historical counterparties. If the first and last characters match a prior address but the middle characters differ, MetaMask will display a blocking alert during the transfer flow.
MetaMask also updated how it displays addresses by showing more characters to reduce confusion.
The feature is now available on MetaMask Mobile and the browser extension.
Separately, Blockaid security data cited in the report said more than 65.4 million address poisoning incidents occurred between January 2025 and February 2026.
