Ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran are placing significant pressure on the U.S. defense budget and munitions stockpiles, U.S. media reported. According to Odaily, The Wall Street Journal cited people familiar with the matter as saying internal Pentagon estimates suggest the war and related spending may be nearing or reaching $80 billion.

The report said the Pentagon has warned that if costs continue to rise, it could face a shortage of operating funds in the summer and may need Congress to pass an emergency supplemental appropriation. It added that the potential funding gap has not become a formal budget request but has been raised in discussions between senior Defense Department officials and Congress.

A former Defense Department financial official said early estimates were about $29 billion, but actual costs could be far higher.

The conflict has also been described as significantly drawing down key U.S. munitions inventories, including THAAD and Patriot interceptor missiles. Several research institutions said the United States has used a substantial share of related stockpiles, and that replenishment for some models could take years.

Separately, Congress is advancing a new National Defense Authorization Act expected to total more than $1 trillion, including billions of dollars for Israel-related defense systems and cooperative programs, the report said.
