Illinois has become the first U.S. state to impose a digital asset transaction tax, after passing SB 3019 to levy a 0.2% business tax on brokers.
According to NS3.AI, the tax is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027, and generate about $60 million in annual revenue.
The measure is structured as a tax on business activity rather than on profits.
