The 2026 World Cup has begun in Mexico City with an opening ceremony full of colour, dancing, and a performance by global music star Shakira.In the first match in Group A, Mexico beat South Africa in the World Cup opener, which featured three red cards.Mexico took a ninth-minute lead through Julian Quinones. Raul Jimenez then scored his first goal at a World Cup finals, heading in Mexico’s second.South Africa’s Yaya Sithole became the first player to be sent off at the 2026 World Cup.Themba Zwane was also dismissed for South Africa, leaving them down to nine players, before Mexico’s Cesar Montes was sent off late on.In the other Group A match, South Korea came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1, with substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scoring the winning goal in the 80th minute of their World Cup opener.The Czech Republic took the lead through captain Ladislav Krejci in the 59th minute, but South Korea levelled through midfielder Hwang In-beom. Hwang then turned provider for South Korea’s winner, scored by substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu.Tomorrow’s matches, on June 13, are Canada v Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B at Toronto Stadium, and USA v Paraguay in Group D at Los Angeles Stadium.
