Alex Finn said the AI subscription model is nearing its end, citing changes to access for Claude Fable 5.
According to Odaily, Finn wrote on X that Claude Fable 5 will be available through Anthropic’s subscription service only until June 22, after which users will need to pay based on token usage.
Finn said this shift would extend into a broader industry trend in which frontier models are no longer included in subscription plans. He added that subscription fees would provide access only to older, lower-cost models, while use of the latest models would require per-token payments.
Finn said AI subscriptions previously relied on subsidies, claiming users could pay $200 per month and receive token allowances worth thousands of dollars, leading AI companies to incur large losses. He added that with less investor funding and IPOs approaching, companies need to become profitable and the subsidy model is not sustainable.
