Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz is not international waters, describing it as jointly owned by Iran and Oman and located thousands of miles from the U.S. coast. According to Odaily, he said maritime boundaries in the area are clearly defined.

Araghchi said the strait is only 21 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point, or about 39 kilometers, and that the entire strait lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman.

He said Iran believes this legal status gives Iran and Oman the right to regulate passage through the strait.
