Zcash core developer Sean Bowe said Zcash organizations and protocol developers have agreed on specific consensus rule changes for the Ironwood upgrade.

According to Foresight News, Ironwood will introduce a new shielded pool that uses the Orchard protocol.

Bowe said the Orchard circuit will add a flag controlled by consensus rules that can disable payments to other users within the pool while keeping change functionality, described as a privacy protection mechanism. After the upgrade, the existing Orchard pool will enable this restriction and will prevent funds from being transferred into the old pool by constraining valueBalance.

Under the plan, new user payments would need to use the new pool, and users would be encouraged to migrate funds from the old pool to the new one. Bowe added that users can gradually demonstrate that no prior counterfeit minting occurred by migrating funds.

He said participating parties have moved into implementation, specification development, and ecosystem support, and are advancing multiple audits and formal verification efforts.
