Agra police arrested Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) junior staff member Hasmat Hussain for allegedly impersonating gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi and sending extortion letters to at least eight people linked to AMU.
According to Foresight News, The Times of India reported that the letters targeted individuals including professors, doctors, and alumni, each demanding $50,000 and warning of serious consequences if payment was not made.
Police said the letters were sent on June 3 from the Connaught Place post office in Delhi. Investigators alleged Hussain was familiar with the victims’ personal information and financial circumstances.
Authorities said they identified the suspect using CCTV footage, hotel records, and technical methods, and arrested him in Agra on Monday.
