June 4 - U.S. job openings fell to their lowest level in more than three years in April, in line with a gradual slowdown in the labor market. The results of the Job Openings and Labor Mobility Survey (JOLTS), released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed job openings fell to 8.059 million in April from 8.36 million downgraded the previous month, below all expectations. The decrease in job openings was fairly broad, with the largest declines in the health care and government sectors. Job openings also fell in the lodging and food service sectors, likely reflecting California's higher minimum wage requirements. Recent data suggest the labor market is cooling, but the cooling is being achieved gradually through slower hiring rather than outright layoffs. Fed officials hope this trend will continue in order to control demand and contain inflation, while keeping millions out of work.
