Hong Kong police recently said they had seen a surge in the number of counterfeit banknotes used in cryptocurrency scams. Authorities seized 3,396 counterfeit banknotes worth about $320,000 between January and April. A total of 1,693 "training banknotes" and 347 low-quality counterfeit banknotes were confiscated in three major cryptocurrency-related cases. The training banknotes, which are mainly used to train bank staff, are similar to the HK $1,000 banknote, but lack anti-counterfeiting features and are marked with the words "practice coupon" in Chinese. Fraudsters will open fake shops or arrange in-person transactions to offer cryptocurrency exchange services for cash.
