One of the biggest concerns for Coinbase Chief Information Security Officer Jeff Lunglhofer right now is one that other security executives are nervous about: the rapid proliferation of deepfakes. There are already videos circulating that feature the voices and images of cryptocurrency CEOs like Coinbase's Brian Armstrong and Ripple's Brad Garlinghouse, promising to give away free tokens.
Lunglhofer warns that large platforms like YouTube - which is not wary of crypto scams even in the best of times - may be slow to stop deepfakes because, on the surface, they appear harmless and do not contain the illegal content that platforms do their best to detect.
Most worryingly, Lunglhofer says the quality of deepfakes is improving every month, which will make them more persuasive and harder to detect. In response to this impending onslaught, and the scam issue, he has a suggestion that goes beyond vigilance: If you're moving money, slow down.
