Wang Yunhe and his gang "created and used malicious software" to hack into and attack millions of civilian "Windows" computers in countries around the world, the Department of Justice said in a statement on Wednesday. From 2018 to July 2022, Wang Yunhe, 35, and his gang acquired $99 million in cryptocurrency and fiat currency by selling hijacked proxy Internet Protocol Addresses, the department said.
The cybercriminals purchased infected Internet Protocol Addresses and bypassed financial fraud detection systems to steal billions of dollars "from Financial Institution Group, credit card distribution companies and federal loan programs," the statement said, including fraudulent unemployment insurance claims that took advantage of those Internet Protocol Addresses controlled by criminals, causing losses of nearly $6 billion to the United States.
The US and Singapore law enforcement agencies joined forces to crack the botnet fraud case, and the main culprit, Wang Yunhe, was arrested
