Tigran Gambaryan, the head of Binance compliance, is currently detained in Nigeria where his family says he is suspected of contracting malaria. Gambaryan has not been transferred from Kuje prison to hospital despite a referral order from court judge Emeka Nwite on May 23. Gambaryan, who along with Binance faces charges of tax evasion and money laundering, collapsed in a Nigerian court on May 24.
Gambaryan, an American citizen who has been detained in Nigeria for more than two months, was arrested after being invited to resolve the government's dispute with Binance. Another Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, was also detained but later escaped.
Mr. Gambaryan's wife, Yuki Gambaryan, was appalled by the authorities' failure to comply with the court order and called on all parties, including the United States government, to help Mr. Gambaryan get to the hospital for treatment and eventually return home. Hearings on tax evasion and money laundering charges are scheduled for June 14 and June 20, respectively.
