Former US president Donald Trump promised to reduce the sentence of Silk Road founder Ross Ubricht on day one if he is re-elected president at the Liberal Party's national convention in Washington DC. Ubricht was sentenced in 2015 to two life sentences plus 40 years, effectively life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, for creating and operating the Silk Road dark web marketplace. Silk Road, which operated from 2011 to 2013 and was mainly used to buy and sell drugs anonymously, is widely regarded as the first real use case for bitcoin. Mr. Trump said Ubricht had served 11 years in prison and "we're going to bring him home". Many in the audience held signs saying "Free Ross" and cheered Mr. Trump's pledge.
