On May 23rd, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, wrote that "Layer2" and "sharding" are often described in public discussions as two opposing strategies for blockchain scaling. But when you dig into the underlying technology, there is a mystery: the actual scaling method is exactly the same. Both have some form of database sharding, both have proof of fraud or ZK-SNARK proof, and both have methods for solving cross-{ rollup, shard} communication. The main difference is: who is responsible for building and updating these parts, and how much autonomy they have.
A Layer2-centric ecosystem implements sharding very realistically technically, but this is a sharding that can create its own rules. This is very powerful and is capable of inspiring a lot of creativity and independent innovation. But it also has key challenges, especially when it comes to coordination. For a Layer2-centric ecosystem like Ethereum to succeed, it needs to understand these challenges and tackle them head-on in order to reap as much of the benefits of a Layer1-centric ecosystem as possible and come as close as possible to having the best features of both.
