Members of the U.S. Congress have asked the SEC and FINRA to provide non-public communications and records of the Prometheum Special Purpose Broker (SPBD) application and approval process. Lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with the SEC's March 26 response regarding the Ethereum (ETH) classification and Prometheum's intent to host ETH, and set a June 5 deadline for responses.
Prometheum received SPBD approval from FINRA in May 2023 and launched ETH as a custodian service for securities on May 17. Its CEO Aaron Kaplan has caused controversy in the crypto industry by supporting the regulation of cryptocurrencies under existing securities laws. The Blockchain Association filed a Freedom of Information Act request in June questioning the transparency of its approval process.
