Former FTX executive Ryan Salame, who faces criminal charges over the multi-billion dollar collapse of the cryptocurrency empire, should be jailed for five to seven years, U.S. prosecutors said. In a sentencing memo filed Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan, federal prosecutors said the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to "serious crimes that warrant a heavy sentence to ensure Salame receives a just punishment."
Prosecutors wrote that the campaign finance crime was one of the largest crimes in U.S. history, with unlicensed money transfer operations trading more than $1 billion without proper oversight. Salame will be sentenced on May 28.
Salame's lawyer argued that his sentence should not exceed 18 months.
