Geoffrey Hinton, the world-renowned artificial intelligence (AI) expert hailed as the "godfather of artificial intelligence," recently consulted with members of the UK government in Downing Street, suggesting that lawmakers consider adopting a universal basic income (UBI) to counter the looming threat of unemployment.
Hinton believes that the artificial intelligence revolution will mainly benefit the wealthy. Laymen, blue-collar workers, and those in automatable jobs could lose their sources of income, which he said in a recent interview with the BBC "will be bad for society". Hinton said that before the threat loomed, he speculated that five to 20 years from now, there is a half chance that we will have to deal with artificial intelligence trying to take over.
